“That was a mistake,” I tell him. “I’m just not ready to have a man in my life,” I sternly express to him, and I have to wonder if he can hear the panic edged at the back of my voice.

“You’re a woman who screams sex, Junie. Do you really think you can go through life without enjoying that in your life?”

“I scream sex?” I repeat, feeling like I just swallowed my tongue.

“Oh, yeah, more than anyone I have ever met.”

“You’re wrong,” I deny.

“It’s been a year, Junie, but I haven’t forgotten a moment of our time together.”

“That was a lifetime ago. I’m a different person now. I have a new life plan.”

“A life plan?”

“Yeah. I just decided on it tonight,” I tell him and that’s not a lie. I decided on it right this minute, and I’m going to stick to it.

“What is this life plan, Junie?” he asks, and his dark eyes hold a humor in them that I shouldn’t like, but I do—even if they are freaking me out.

“I’m buying stock in batteries.”

“Batteries?”

“Definitely. The only man I can handle in my life is Bob.”

“Bob.” For a minute he looks confused and then he starts laughing. His laughter warms me, chasing away the last remnants of the fear I felt earlier.

“Oh, Junie. You’re in trouble now.”

“I am?”

“Definitely,” he says, but he gets up and starts walking to the door. I follow him like I’m in a trance.

“Why am I in trouble, Sheriff?”

“Because I always did like a challenge, and now, I’m going to feel compelled to remind you that your vibrator can’t compare to what I can do to your body.” He opens the door and casts me one last glance. “Make sure you lock this door, Baby. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“It’s a good thing you have a big dick, because your personality sucks sometimes, Sheriff.”

Junie is broken, but she’s still a badass. I think it’s her determination to avoid her history of bad choices and the resulting pain that’s made her stronger. No way does she want to repeat past mistakes and allow any man to hurt her again. No longer is she hiding her true self, she’s letting her sass and style fly free. Her sarcasm and pink tutu are an instant turn-on for Sheriff Ben Kingston. He might be recovering from a broken heart, but his dick ain’t broke.

I enjoyed the hell out of the witty banter between Ben and Junie. But, I might have enjoyed the dirty talk even more. Ben is most definitely an alpha #HotCop and he’ll have you sticking your head in the freezer to cool off.

And then there’s the suspense the author throws into the mix to keep you on your toes. You’ll be fanning yourself one minute and picking your jaw up off the floor the next. Never knowing what’s headed your way and afraid to blink in case you miss something.

Another thing I loved was the support characters. Gavin is Junie’s brother and he is also an alpha #HotCop. The two cavemen are hilarious together because they want to hate each other but can’t. They argue but work well together when it comes to protecting Junie.

Of course, I was rooting for Junie to give Ben a second chance. I don’t blame her for walking when she did, I would have done the same. But, he won me over pretty quick and I knew he was the right man to handle her brokenness with care. And sometimes, that care requires his bossy side to come out. You might want to read those parts several times just to make sure it sticks…sigh.

This series keeps getting gooder and gooder as I get more and more attached to the Stone Lake residents. I don’t know if there will be more, but wherever the author leads I’ll follow. The line forms here…
