Liam...holy smokin' hot! If this is how all the hero's are in Lake's books then I am hooked! This is the first book that I have read by this author and I loved her writing style. The characters are believable and engaging. Who doesn't love a sexy, dirty talkin' alpha with a sweet, protective, nurturing side to him? I was hooked from the first chapter. Liam had me literally swooning from the moment he stepped out of his patrol car! I have officially added Liam to my list of sexy book boyfriends!
Brianna Avery has finally had it with her boyfriend and after spending time in the hospital she has found herself making the drive home to complete her recovery and get as far away as possible from the man who has spent the last couple of years hurting her. Scared, battered and broken she is hesitant to return home, but knows in the end it is for the best at the moment. Knowing that the one man she has truly loved is still living there makes this trip a little harder to deal with. Leaving four years ago was the best thing she could have done, even when Liam broke her heart. Now she can only hope that when she faces him again, her heart won't take another beating.
From the moment you meet Liam you can just feel the protectiveness seeping from him. Not only is he gorgeous, sexy and caring, he has this protective side to him that will do anything to keep Bree safe. It doesn't matter that they haven't seen each other is several years, he has always had a soft spot for her and has held her in his heart since they first met years ago. Liam isn't afraid to go after what he wants and that is Bree. He knows that she has been through hell and he wants to be the one to help heal her. But he has to remember that he can't push her to fast. She doesn't need another man in her life telling her what to do, when to do it and who she can and can't spend time with. You can feel the chemistry radiating off the two of them when they first see one another after all those years apart. And once they act on it...holy smokes...Liam knows just how to take care of her and the mouth on him makes it all the more sexy to read.
Protecting Bree is now Liam's number one priority and he will stop at nothing to make sure that she is safe. Now that he has her back in his life he will do whatever it takes to keep her there, even if it costs him his job. He let her get away once and he won't let it happen again. I loved how we got to see the sheriff side of Liam. He is dedicated to his work and bringing justice to the victims that he works with. He is extremely caring and thorough in his investigations, though at times he takes matters into his own hands, hoping that the end result will bring more safety and freedom for Bree.
Bree has suffered long enough at the hands of her boyfriend. She is no stranger to violence. Growing up she watched her own mother being battered around. She herself had a few run-ins with her mother's boyfriends that left her hurting as well. Escaping this small town was the one thing that she hoped would save her from all the heartache and pain she dealt with growing up. Bree's character is so strong. She doesn't want to dwell on the bad for to long and learns to take control and protect herself all with the help of Liam and a few of his friends. She never wants to be the victim again. She has goals that she wants to achieve and she isn't afraid of the hard work that it will take to get there.
Some of the subject matter in this book may be a trigger for some readers. Lake does an amazing job of writing about abuse and the reality that is a victims life. No one deserves to be treated that way and she shines a light on what it is like for those dealing with abuse and what can be done to find a way out of it. Her writing still is refreshing, gripping and edgy. I look forward to reading more of her work in the future. Bullets & Bonfires is a standalone that will leave you wanting more!
5 Arrestingly Sexy Stars
Autumn believes true love stories never end. She’s easily amused, a procrastinator and loves romances with true alpha heroes who cherish the sassy women they fall in love with. Her past lives include baking cookies, slinging shoes, and practicing law. Playing with her imaginary friends is her favorite job so far. Autumn prefers to write her romances on the classy side of dirty, and she’s a sucker for a filthy-talking, demanding alpha male hero. The bigger the better.
